Great if you don't compare to theatre

If I hadn't seen the theatre production first, I would no doubt have loved this movie! I still enjoyed it very much, but Pierce and Meryl's voices were not nearly strong enough to compare to the live performers. I didn't appreciate that some songs were moved around, sung by other characters or hardly even audible while unnecessary dialogue muffled what were some of the better ones.
They took some of the funniest parts and made them less funny, but overall managed to do okay with the storyline. Meryl acted very well and the roles of Sky & Sophie were sung well. I will be buying the dvd when it comes out as it was good, but I was less impressed with this than Phantom, Rent and Hairspray's latest movie versions. The use of big names probably lessened the quality of voice more than improved the quality of the movie as a whole. Still worth a watching.
