batman is not my favorite hero. i'm a clark kent super-man struggle with a lack of humanity in a humanity ridden world kind of guy. however, the dark night brings it, i regret to say, better than superman returns. we'll start with the obvious. the late oscar nominee heath ledger. a lot of people and hype will surround this movie because of an overdose. ledger is great as the joker. it's different than jack, and jack was brilliant. the scene where he leaves, candystriped, the hospital in silence and is prancing and destroying via remote is one of the best scenes i've witnessed in a thourough cinematic personal history. there is a great movie here, bale is very good as wayne, maybe ok as batman. batman is a side character here. the other characters, even morgan "ubiquitous" freeman are more a character than he. the movie could have been the joker. batman's story has been told over and over. horribly multiple times. the joker is always only a foil. here he is the movie. overhype aside. the length and multiple climaxing drops it from great for me, i use a four point system, and the fourth point is saved for greats like shaw shank or good will hunting. i don't use half points so, it's a 3, but a good one.
