I'm tired of seeing a slew of adaptations of "Alice in Wonderland" that remove its key traces of madness in pursuit of a more serious tale. Not one single character was "mad" enough in this film...the closest to it was the March Hare, who needed more dialogue, and the Red Queen's one line about "a warm pig for her aching feet." What should've been a creative, madcap movie fell victim to the EPIC FANTASY / QUEST/ FORETELLING motif that plagues fantasy films today. And I wasn't even impressed by Johnny Depp, which to me is sacriligious in and of itself as I believe he can do no wrong. I wanted to desperately like this film but found myself bored with its predictability and lack of insanity. I would recommend this film only for its visuals.
The movie itself is gorgeously filmed, the acting is excellent, and the soundtrack is fantastical and creepy (did anyone else think the singers sounded like they were from Iceland?). I think the issue of this film, though, is that Hollywood couldn't agree on who its target audience was supposed to be...it is marketed as a kid's movie but definitely small children will be freaked out by some of it. And older adults might find some of the plot points painfully obvious and contrived; and some of the whimsical aspects might actually be a bit overbearing. I admit, I wanted this movie to go to a darker place. In the end, I was so bummed that I didn't enjoy this movie, because I wanted to so badly!
