Not a strike out, but far from a home run

If you're going to see this, see it in the theatre, most definitely. You won't be *sorry* you saw it, but you won't be clamoring to see it again. But don't bother paying extra for 3D, it really makes virtually no difference for this movie.
I don't know if it's current CG technology or what, but all the modern fantasy/sci-fi movies are starting to feel the same to me. They're in badlands/a desert. There's a big crumbling arena battle with monsters. There's huge, sprawling chasms and virtually no vegetation and dusty, dirty chases and battles.
This wasn't a terrible movie, but it *should* have been a great movie. Instead, it just felt like I was watching Conan, Cowboys vs. Aliens, or even parts of Star Wars episodes I-III all over again. All of these films are starting to feel like watching different people play the same video game.
I'm sure those who haven't read the books will like it much better than those who have, also. It pulled a few classic bits from the books, but had little of the epic feel of Burroughs' books, instead feeling like yet another action movie.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
