Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is beautiful, dark, and creepy. The performances by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, and Anne Hathaway are everything you could hope for, and Mia Wasikowska (of HBO's In Treatment) is stunning as the ethereal-looking but very tough 19-year-old Alice. Don't expect a simple retelling of the Lewis Carroll story, though. This movie takes place 13 years later and tells a much darker story. The special effects are amazing, there's lots of action, the new characters (esp. Bayard the Bloodhound) are excellent additions to the story, and the ending is satisfying but not formulaic. I wouldn't bring very young children to see this movie, but the rest of the family will love it.
