I read the series at the behest of my teen daughter and thoroughly enjoyed the books. We went to the "early nerd special" to be among the first to see the film. Overall it was extremely well executed. You don't have to have read the books to understand and enjoy the film. It captured the salient points of the book and the essence of the characters in an entertaining way. It was surprisingly humorous, and in many ways, exactly like my own visual images I conjured up while reading, a testament to the involvement of the author and her vision. The acting, cinamatography and staging blend nicely into a very well spent 2 hours.
This was a brilliantly well executed and acted film. The plot kept turning, the characters were well rounded, and the cinamatography was spectacular. It was 2.5 hours of pure pleasure. It's more than a small tragedy that we will not get to see Heath Ledger reprise his role in the future.
