I had fun watching this... it was fun to see Dubai in a movie as I was traveling there when the Burj Khalifa was being built (the world's tallest building featured in the film). The plot seemed like more of a device to fit in certain sequences, rather then the other way around, and there was nothing in this film that I felt I hadn't already seen in another movie. Nothing made me go, "oh, wow, that's insane!" ... which is really the main reason I go to see a movie like this. So, all-in-all, it was fun, but it will be a movie I'll soon forget.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Not as good as I'd been led to expect, but a fairly good movie if you can ignore the MAJOR plot devices that make no sense in the real world. I won't go into them here for fear of creating spoilers, but lets just say the main plot device for how the apes become what they become on a large scale is totally nonsensical to anyone with *any* education in the basic sciences. Was kind of hard to get around the multitude of devices like that -- things that require you to ignore for the plot to make any sense.

Burton is just not an action director.

As huge a fan as I've been of Burton's work (Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas are two of my favorite movies of all time), this movie just fell a bit flat for me. It was enjoyable, and I got a few hardy laughs. But the action scenes were just incredibly weak, and for some reason I never really *cared* enough about any of the characters to get emotionally involved. So, I left feeling mildly entertained, and underwhelmed.
Very well done, Ledger was phenomenal. Jack Nicholson has to be a touch ashamed of his turn in the part after seeing this.
Ledger completely *inhabits* the role of the Joker.
There are certainly weak points (the second villain -- I won't say who -- has a transformation to evil that is not believable at all) , but overall it's an incredibly impressive piece of work for a mainstream summer action movie.
