Yuck. Why do they always have to shtick everything up? Jay Chou was lovely - the only good thing in the film, aside from the innovative action sequences. Why cast Edward James Olmos, awesome actor, and then give him absolutely nothing to do? Ditto Tom Wilkinson. Why make this into a "dumb and dumber" movie? Why not just play it straight and let the characters and the story speak for itself. So sad to waste so much money on a story that could have actually been fun and exciting to watch.
Yikes! How sad to take half a dozen excellent actors and stuff them into this dreadful film. No story, no plot, no arc, no nuthin' except a few good special effects that worked for the most part, except when the aliens started slurping up bodies, at which point it reminded me of the equally dreadful FX in Jaws when the 'shark' starts eating people. We didn't have high hopes for this film, but thought that it would at least have some kind of story. 'fraid not. If not for the performances, which were as good as one can make them without any real dialogue, it would have been even worse, if such a thing is possible. Too bad.
Excellent film - so much more than the current typical sci-fi stuff with which we're inundated every summer. A strong story, extremely interesting characters, and really gives you something to think about.
Brilliant performance by Meryl Streep - superb performances by everyone else - the chemistry between the partners of both couples was phenomenal and made the whole film magical. And of course, it makes you want to start cooking immediately. On the way out, five people were overheard saying, "Let's go get the cookbook immediately!" Meryl Streep's performance is Oscar material for certain.
Excellent in every respect - from the casting to the performances to the amazingly suspenseful story, to the non-stop moving camera work, to the extremely clever plot twist that will allow a whole new set of narrative arcs to blossom forth, it was just wonderful. This die-hard original Star Trek fan will vow that the performances of the actors in this film are even stronger, deeper, more insightful, humorous, romantic and delightful than the originals. And that's really saying something.
We saw Crank the other night and wondered, "What's wrong with this picture?" Simple-no story. It was self-serving, nothing for us to care about. Wolverine could have been the same - yet it was not only action packed, with creative fight and flight sequences (none too long, none gratuitous), but it also had a story . Too many films are so enthralled with their own gimmicks lately they forget that nothing will capture the audience’s attention without a story- compelling from first frame to last, excellent performances. Of course, Hugh Jackman is always charismatic and exciting to watch, but the casting of Liev Schreiber was brilliant - he was the perfect Sabretooth. Wolverine is a wonderful prequel to the X-Men trilogy.
Yes, it has lots of graphic violence. REALLY graphic violence. But it also has meat - not just very fancy special effects and super suspense. This film deals with some very strong social and philosophical issues with a wry sense of humor, a slightly tongue-in-cheek outlook, and some really fun performances.
I don't think Clint Eastwood has ever made a bad film and this one is tops on the list! It has everything one could wish for and more - wonderful performances, a powerful and important storyline, great chemistry between all the characters, suspense, comedy, poignancy, excitement, love, and a perfectly crafted character arc for Eastwood and the other players. Everything is just right, from the seemingly hand-crafted mahogany moldings in Eastwood's house to the Hmong traditions, from the perfectly arranged tools in the garage to the granddaughter's nose ring, every single detail is perfectly etched, there to lend subtle support to the story, but never to overpower. Go see it! A great, strong and moving way to start of f the year!
Special effects and creatures are amazing - story is perfect for this kind of film - a delightful cross between Star Wars and Men in Black - romance, action, lots of humor, great fight scenes - looking forward to another sequel!
