At its heart, 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' aims for fun, old-fashioned thrills and delivers for the most part. It's a fun ride. A well-paced and highly entertaining family film made with good humor, panache, and imagination.
I enjoyed the film and feel that it established the foundation for many story elements that were curiously unexplained in the previous trilogy. It has exactly the same strengths and weaknesses as the original three, plus breathtakingly spectacular visual design and special effects. I will say this: the time and money they spent working on this post-conversion is evident in the final result. It is technically very impressive. A must see.
Safe House"'is an uber-testosterone feature with enough fire power, mano-to-mano combat and car crashes to keep you satisfied and awake. Denzel Washington is one of those rare actors blessed with enough natural charisma that he can repeat things and still entertain us. While Safe House does suffer from predictability, there are enough real thrills and better-than-average stunts to make it worthwhile for action fans to check out. A must see.
Sinister and somewhat spooky, bearing the stylish Hammer Films imprint....an old-fashioned ghost story designed to make you jump repeatedly and never be quite sure where it's going. Daniel Radcliffe plays the haunted Hammer hero so very well. A must see.
Caught a sneak peak of this and I have to say I was pretty blown away. Inventively directed, cleverly written and superbly acted fantasy thriller that brilliantly mashes up the superhero, found footage and high school genres to terrifically entertaining effect. A stunning superhero/sci-fi that has appeared out of nowhere to demand your immediate attention. A must see!
This gritty, relentlessly intense survival tale easily gets dibs on "feel-cold" movie of the year. Certainly an adventure film but one with a spiritual ingredient that is both surprising and fiercely resonant. Anchored by one of Neesons strongest performances ever, "The Grey" delivers on all fronts. A genuinely entertaining thriller that puts a chill through you in more ways than one. A must see.
"Man on a Ledge" doesn't aim high, but what it aims to do, it does. This is basically an audience participation movie in which you go along for the ride, knowing that everything will work out just fine; good will triumph and evil will get its comeuppance. Man on a Ledge is the kind of movie where you need to check your brain at the door and enjoy a brief respite from reality. The actual plot is ludicrous, as are the stunts, but the execution of it all is fun enough to watch and make it a must see.
A great improvement in the story, it's not only about the stunning return for Selene and the incredible Underworld 3D experience, its about bringing the underworld into ours and seeing how the game rapidly changes when the numbers at war increase. All in all, fans new and old shall be highly satisfied. A must see.
It's only half of a good movie. As soon as those dogfighting planes land, the story trips up by skimming the surface of history. Red Tails" has genuine admiration for the sacrifices and achievements made by the Tuskegee Airmen, but they deserve a better commemoration than this. Less gritty than Saving Private Ryan, more squeaky-clean than Captain America, Tails zips like a speedier, higher flyin' Top Gun. No matter its faults, its worth checking out.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is grim, but also uplifting as it defines how finally coming to grips with the inexplicable can be cathartic and how, though the person is gone, the memories always live on. It's a genuinely moving and often lovely piece of work - beautifully acted and, ultimately, earning its tears. A must see.
