McAvoy and Fassbender are a casting triumph. These two have, yes, real star magnetism, both individually and together: They're both cool and intense, suave and unaffected, playful and dead serious about their grand comic-book work. You'll like "X-Men: First Class" even if you don't like superhero movies. Features a spectacular mix of well-choreographed action, revisionist history, themes of tolerance, and great performances. This will be one of the best movies of this season. X-Men: First Class" recaptures the character-driven strengths of the first two films in this superhero series -- while adding a surprising dash of '60s spy-movie style. A must see.
This was a really funny movie. It so closely mirrors its blockbuster predecessor in every vital aspect that it can barely call itself a sequel. Stranger, funnier. This is male bonding through f'd-up adversity. The unexpectedly wonderful thing about this sequel is that it actually improves on the jokes, and the crap they get into is way worse! Hangover II" is hilarious with no holds bared movie. Leave the kids at home. See it.
On Stranger Tides is nearly as fleet-footed and fun as the very first film, released in 2003.This fourth film did its job of bringing back a lot of the goofy fun missing from the first two sequels. There's enough of Jack doing his wild hand gestures and lucking his way into the story that Depp fans will dig it. These Stranger Tides lead to a shallow pool, but sometimes a nice wading session might be all you require. All in all, this Pirates comes closer than ever to the whimsy and sparkle of the first film, giving the audience what it wants and keeping the monkey business to a minimum. A must see.
In an era where monster mythology has become raw material for all sorts of mediocrity, Priest is one of the best examples of a broad-scale vampire blockbuster. A mélange of apocalyptic western, gothic horror and vampire action movie, Priest won't win any awards for originality. Still, it's streamlined and executed well enough to earn a tip of the cap from those in its target demo. A must see for those sick of all the glittery Twilight vampires.
Expanding the cinematic Marvel-verse in stranger ways than the casual viewer might expect, it sets the stage for a larger storyline while still delivering a heroic tale for old-school comic readers. Solid storytelling, production design that reflects comic book roots, a hugely charismatic lead in Aussie Chris Hemsworth and Sir Anthony Hopkins suppressing his inner ham to deliver a real performance all add up to make "Thor" a winner. I can't tell you if it was entirely faithful to the comics, and at this stage, I don't care. I want to see good movies, and Thor delivered. A must see.
The biggest, best and most furious Fast of them all. Pretty cars, prettier women, insanely absurd action that truly thrills even as it shatters all physical laws, and enough testosterone-fueled violence to satisfy the most-rabid WWE SmackDown crowd. With this latest chapter, I think they've finally made the film they've been gearing up to make now for a while, the most completely unhinged mainstream action movie since Bad Boys 2. This is how you make a summer movie, which makes it a must see!
The Lincoln Lawyer is a well-crafted, well-cast adaptation of Michael Connelly's best-selling novel, shot on interesting Los Angeles locations. It's nice to see McConaughey getting relatively serious instead of coasting through yet another witless romcom, with or without Kate Hudson. The film does take some predictable turns - even with its "surprise" twist - but it's a perfectly enjoyable time killer. Not since John Grisham's The Firm has there been such a stylish lawyer tale as this, which makes this a must see.
Scream 4" finds a way to live up to its gory past while it carves out new terrors in new ways.Wes Craven proves yet again that he has the ability to bounce back and offer a bloody slice of entertainment as well-made as most of the films he has inspired in the decades since his debut. The best Scream since the original and a must see!
[Green] has an easy touch when it comes to comedy, which means you can almost sense those moments when the actors give themselves over to the silliness. A hilarious adventure that's as dirty as the dung our heroes trudge on.Franco truly saves the day. His hilarious deadpan in the midst of utter insanity turns a bawdy goof into a most welcome lark indeed.A spirited and (mostly) funny genre spoof from the same team responsible for Pineapple Express.A really big budget movie full of action and special effects, all to make really immature jokes. I totally support that and I enjoy the exercise. It could be funnier but it's consistently pleasant. A must see
With an A-list cast and incredible production values, Hanna is a speeding train. Hop on and hold on tight."Hanna" is, on a certain level, ridiculous. But the way Mr. Wright conjures his images and parcels out his narrative is hypnotic and so seductive that wherever the film is heading we want to follow.Visually and aurally, "Hanna" is a highlight so far in 2011, its destined to leave audiences utterly divided. A must see.
