With plenty of pulpy action, a pleasantly retro vibe, and a handful of fine performances, Captain America is solidly old-fashioned blockbuster entertainment.Rather than fight against the character's flag-waving, Nazi-busting roots, the movie embraces them, going back to the early '40s to remind us what made the "greatest generation" so great.Captain America packs a comic, moralistic and patriotic punch that's well worth watching, regardless of your interest in further following the Marvel adventure. All in all, a must see.
Fasten your seat belts. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an emotional roller-coaster ride. This is a terrific, smartly designed adolescent adventure, visually rich, narratively satisfying, and bound to resonate for years to come. Watched as a stand-alone film it's likely to strike newcomers as completely mystifying, but committed and even semi-committed fans will surely welcome it as a worthy climax to the most successful film franchise in history. The best possible end for the series that began a decade ago. A must see.
Bridesmaids is a stiletto-sharp, raunchy, no-holds-barred yuk-fest that stands as a worthy female counterpart to the likes of Wedding Crashers and The Hangover. The only question is: Will Kristen Wiig ever be this good again? The answer is, let's hope so. Bridesmaids rocks. Hopefully, a movie star is born. There is real depth to the characterizations and friendships. It is so funny because it is all so painfully real. A must see.
Sustained by recession-era resentment fantasies, strong plot structure, and a bunch of top comic performers enjoying themselves so much it is impossible not to join them. Horrible Bosses is without question the funniest movie released so far this year, and the slyest raunch-com to date. With stellar comic timing from the entire ensemble and a dark streak of edgy humor with just enough wit to make it not seem cruel, makes it the best workplace comedy since "Office Space." All in all, very relateable and a must see this summer.
A pleasant slice of summer counter-programming that will delight adult moviegoers who complain that Hollywood doesn't make films for them anymore... engaging, constantly warm and funny, and very direct in its ambitions. "Larry Crowne" is such a perfectly pleasant and breezy, consistently engaging piece of work. Tom Hanks directing AND starring...Sounds like Win-Win to me! A must see.
The ultimate Michael Bay movie. It has moments of absolute greatness and we won't see any better fireworks show this summer. Enjoy it. It's the Transformers movie that we always wanted them to make. Michael Bay uses the 3D almost miraculously well, achieving real moments of vertigo with the extra dimension.A clanging, thrashing threequel that represents a near-complete upgrade over 2009's critically-despised Revenge of the Fallen. A must see in IMAX 3D!
The film is fast and often funny. And while it's not for children - really - I bet the adults who just spent a school year with them are going to love it.Diaz is absolutely fearless in portraying a character with almost no redeeming features. All in all, you'll be hot for teacher. A must see.
A film I can both hate and love in equal measure. Not nearly as terrible as I expected, but certainly not great either. ...and for someone with the power to create anything he can imagine, he sure has an extremely limited imagination. To quote Inception, "You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger" The real reason for the 4 star rating is, I feel the CGI was not up to to par as alot of the other summer blocksbusters look like they wil be and since it is from DC I was expecting it to be better and a little less cartoonish. Other than that this is a pretty decent movie and makes for a good end of the school year film. A must see.
There is a lot to like about Super 8, because Abrams ... delivers a phenomenal pop-art experience, dazzling the senses while aiming straight for the heart. It's as full of rich characters as it delivers the smart popcorn-movie scares.Though it won't earn any points for originality, in Abrams' hands 'Super 8' is a slick package of hand-me-down goods, smartly put together and...efficiently executed.Often exciting and entertaining,Super 8 is worth the extra effort to remain in the dark, so its old-school popcorn delights stay fresh. Abrams is dealing with an alien, but what he's really fiddling with is time travel, back to the '80s when kids hadn't yet seen it all. A must see.
