This third Paranormal is a prequel that occasionally goes off the rails but also offers more laughs and somewhat more character development than the previous installments. One-ups both of the previous films in quality and quantity of its scares. For sheer knee-jerk scares, Paranormal Activity 3 won't have any serious competition all year. A must see!
A satisfyingly tense desert-island thriller -- just without the desert island. Riveting horror, brilliant premise and fascinating drama, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is first-rate keeping a cool, logical lead. First, you should watch 1982's "The Thing," which is still one of the most suspenseful and frightening movies ever made. Then, the new version is worth checking out, too. Hell actually does freeze over.
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech. Lovers of blood sport action ... are going to enjoy the well-staged fighting sequences ... while tender hearts seeking emotional depth will find the father-son conflict reasonably engaging. Real Steel works so well and the concept is so obvious -- what kid out there hasn't wanted their own robot? that it's surprising Hollywood hasn't made Robo Rocky before. A must see.
50/50" will be liked and appreciated even by people who can't imagine wanting to see it. A remarkably tough-minded meditation on mortality, willing to confront the audience with harsh realities and to grapple with difficult, scary questions. It's an impressive balance between humor and heart. Mostly it's just terribly funny and sad and beautifully acted and terrifically feel-good for being, you know, a cancer comedy. A must see.
I'm giving this movie four stars not because its a bad movie, but because for the average movie goer the plot might be a little confusing and hard to follow. However, that being said look closer at Killer Elite, and you'll see an inky portrait of a world that has lost all moral compass. That's stronger stuff than most action thrillers give you. The movie is all attitude, successfully delivered by Statham, De Niro, and Owen, that benefits from refreshing injections of low-tech adrenaline. If you're willing to accept "Killer Elite" as a shoot-'em-up action movie with good actors taking the spots of the usual lunk heads (but spouting the usual nonsense), you'll be pleased with the film. A must see.
A thriller centered on a young man who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website, Abduction plays out like The Bourne Identity and keeps you gripped from start to finish. That being said I feel that I would have given this five stars had the lead been someone else. I mean nothing against Taylor Lautner because he's good as Jacob in Twilight, but this is not Twilight and he just doesn't seem grown up enough for this role. I will say that he did do a good job but if it was my movie I would have gone a different direction. All in all, after catching the VIP premiere, I would say this movie is worth the while and must see this fall.
The new 'Straw Dogs' is one of the more brutal films in recent years. While Lurie could have gone lighter on the symbolism, he ratchets up the tension with deft intelligence. He's not just making a thriller but a horror film, and we feel his own fear in every scene. For the most part, Lurie's remake serves as a credible update to the original, and the performances from Skarsgard, Marsden and Bosworth are solid. All in all, a must see.
Anyone watching Drive won't be able to take their eyes off Gosling. Playing a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a wheelman for criminals, he rocks like a young Steve McQueen or Robert De Niro. A modern day masterpiece. I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time all over again....delivers enough action, suspense, and revenge to satisfy the multiplex masses while introducing them to the bleak, unsettling stillness and deconstructive black humor of Refn's overseas instincts. A must see.
A nice try, but done in by an annoyingly convoluted script and an obvious dearth of resources. Ends up unexpectedly reserved, which keeps the film at least approachable but never remarkable. It's a weird feeling to be yawning during a movie that spotlights a half-gator/half-man menace. All in all, it is in no way a great movie. But it is a great reminder of what used to be so much fun about bad movies.
A tense, first-rate thriller that will have you running for the soap and water once the end credits start rolling. The most terrifying aspect of Contagion, ultimately, is the plausibility of its premise. Frighteningly believable, businesslike, super-smart and never less than riveting. A must see.
