Quantum comes across as a film that was thrown together as a weak sequel to Casino Royale. There’s plenty of action, but it's so unrealistic and overdone that it distracts from the story. Perhaps that’s intentional since the plot line is disjointed and difficult follow.
In Quantum, Bond totally lacks ingenuity and personality. Gone is the suaveness that sets him apart from the myriad of other characters found in this genre. Instead, he comes across as a cold-blooded killer with diminished appeal to Bond fans.
If you just want to see another mindless action/adventure movie, you're in luck. That's about all you are going to get. If you are looking for a Bond movie, you'll be disappointed. Keep your expectations low.
When I saw the first trailers to this film, I figured I'd pass on it. But with slim pickin's one weekend, I decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised. It's not an outstanding movie or even terribly original, but I did find myself waiting for the next twist and I was totally engaged in the story. If you are looking for nonstop action, check this one out.
Not much substance here, but I have to say I did enjoy the movie. It's just one of those entertaining flicks that generates a few smiles and a laugh or two (or three or four ...). Bernie Mac fans will definitely enjoy it, and others should be entertained if they just want to relax and go with the flow with few expectations.
Disclaimer: Parents, do not take children to this movie! This is an intense drama that centers on some very intense content.
With that said, I found the story disturbing, yet riveting. To think that this actually happened to Jolie's character sends a cold shiver down my spine. I was totally immersed in every facet of this story. Some of the acting lacked a bit, so I'm docking it one star, but for me it measured up in every other way.
This movie bored me to death. There were some mildly entertaining moments and even a few laughs, but I felt I was forcing myself to try and enjoy it.
It starts out very slowly, but the pacing improves about midway through. Unfortunately, by that time I was totally disengaged from the characters and the plot. I couldn't wait for it to end. Obviously, some liked this pic, but I have seen too many movies that were far better.
Serpico it's not, but Pride and Glory is better than many of the corrupt cop movies that have come out lately. Although the story is rather predictable, it's still intense and captivating. Superb acting makes up for a mediocre screenplay, making the movie about more than just two hours of F-bombs and graphic violence. Each of the main character's private struggles provide sufficient motivation to make the story work. It's dark and tragic, but those elements combine to leave the target audience satisfied, even without a cut and dried resolution. Take it for what it is - no more, no less.
I knew when I went to this show that it would be a W. bashing, but I never expected the show to be so poorly done. I know Bush made many errors in judgment, but that in no way justified how W. was shown as a complete idiot. The man portrayed in this movie could never have become dogcatcher much less President. The script was terrible, the acting worse. The movie failed to hold my interest even with the few laughs it did generate. Most of all, I found the picture insulting to anyone with an ounce of intelligence and to the office of POTUS. View at your own risk and eat a lot of buttered popcorn. If the grease doesn't make you sick, the movie just might.
I smiled, laughed, and lip-synched throughout the movie, but must of all, I had fun. If you enjoy the music and can overlook the singing weaknesses of some of the cast, this movie will work for you. Those expecting a Broadway-quality show with professional singers and dancers may be disappointed. First and foremost, this is a musical. The story is secondary to the songs, which is difficult for some people to accept. At times, the songs and the story do not mesh, and the lyrics sort of pop out from no where.
Streep's performance as Donna is admirable and surprisingly strong. Seyfried is nicely cast as Sophie and also gives a solid performance. Brosnan, however, seemed uncomfortable in his role and totally out of place as Sam. I felt no chemistry between Donna and Sam, and Brosnan's singing was much weaker than the others in the cast. Still, I give him him credit for going out on a limb with this role.
The audience was overwhelmingly female during our 7 p.m. Friday night showing, which should be no surprise. Just from general observation, I'd say most of the women enjoyed the movie, and the few men appeared bored and relieved when the movie ended. I'd say most had been reluctant dates for the evening, including husbands like mine.
I'd like to see the movie again, but only as part of a girls' night out. Send the boys to "Dark Knight." They'll thank you later!
