great performances and soundtrack, done in by a plodding plot and a script that needed serious pruning -- this ain't the mason/garland star is born, folks
This is a big, Hollywood, major motion picture with a powerful love story at its core. Given today's economic/social/political landscape, the core themes of the piece resonate powerfully. It is in the vein of "The Way We Were" and "Forest Gump" in the sense that it dramatizes the characters' lives over a significant period of time. The big conceit is the age/reversal bit -- which is very different, and thought provoking and well-executed. Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt were both excellent. True, a big part of the conceit rests upon the special effects/make-up -- but...believe me, it works. You have to see it. I'm not a big fan of those real old-time Hollywood love stories yet I tell you, this one worked, big-time.
