The film was technically well made with stunningly beautiful scenes but the plot line was a little wormy. If you forget about logic, what you know about the laws of physics, and sit back to enjoy the action, fine.
The last Pirate's movie was more than a little hard to follow with all its fantasy, but this last of the Pirate series had 3 or 4 sets of conflicts that made little sense from the standpoint of a plot. The action was exciting as in prior films, and the multiple climaxes mostly predicable. I liked the mermaid best. The 3-D aspect did not seem to enhance the film especially so i would recommend not paying the admission price now but wait until maybe a freebie on Netflix.
I don't at all recall the John Wayne movie of the same name, but would be pretty sure that most anyone could better his performance, and Jeff Bridges was superb in this role. Not having read the book either cannot comment on how well it followed. All in all very entertaining, though I really wonder if people lived such a rough life then with so many murders. I would like to see again sometime, but with subtitles to be able to understand some of the dialog that I did not understand.
The local newspaper critic gave this movie only a B- rating, but I and family enjoyed it. I could believe the character played by Eastwood. Maybe that was his true self! Character development was also good for others, and equally believable. It did not shoot for grandiose scope, but what it covered, was first rate.
The Tallahassee Democrat rated it with an A, which is very unusual. It was generally enjoyable, but a little boring in spots. The family with preteens liked it ok, but were not blown away. The ending was logically even more farfetched than the rest.
Will Smith is as good as ever with his presence in this movie. The only down side I can think of is near the end when it was all being explained as I could not clearly hear the dialog so some of the final scenes were a little puzzling (if would be good if I could turn on subtitles only I could see as needed!) Putting reality more than slightly aside, or at least where you keep your Superman movies, was ok here. Indeed this was a comedy even during the scenes where much real estate was being trashed.. I would be happy to see more of Ms Theron in future flicks, in this type of role or not. I liked the role Jason Bateman had also; he did it well.
Although the movie action was gripping and Angelina Jolie is always a joy to behold and Morgan Freeman is a damn good actor, I found the plot and action too far out to keep my interest. I can suspend belief for a while but this movie with its heavy gore and surreal plot want way over the edge. James McAvoy also turns out to be a talented actor whose presence deserves a better story line than this. It is ok to repeal the laws of physics for fantasy movies like the Henry Potter series, but this one seemed to be trying to play like it was reality.
