There have been few films during my lifetime (I am 61 and an avid moviegoer) I so looked forward to that so completely exceeded my expectations.
Daniel Day-Lewis absolutely inhabits his role and allows an historical figure so many of us wish we could have known to come alive in a way I assumed was impossible. Films about our heroes, especially when they are larger than life, are infamous for falling short. Even the few great ones, such as Gandhi, fail to create a cinematic tension powerful enough to keep us on the edge of our seats when we already know the ending. This film does so with an ease and naturalness that is hard to believe. Nothing is contrived or exaggerated. There is no need. The character of Lincoln has simply been awaiting the collaboration of an actor and director each gifted enough to allow Lincoln's power to finally achieve a true cinematic spark of life.
This is also a film of fundamental importance. Most Americans are unaware of the almost violent battle waged over passage of the 13th Amendment and how absolutely vital achieving that victory was to our nation's future. It is not an exaggeration to say that battle is the great untold story of The Civil War.
See this movie for yourself. Pay attention to it for the sake of your patriotism. Give the gift of it to your children if they are old enough to understand.
