There are positives and negatives. This movie is nothing like Batman Begins, particularly in the way the story flows. It lacks the story telling grace seen in Batman Begins, giving it up in favor of a more chaotic story telling style. Now that's not neccesarily bad, it's more offputting than anything else. Fans of Batman Begins will go into this expecting to see Batman Begins 2. Now it's actually in a way pretty apropriate to have the story flow in such a chaotic way. That's just in the Jokers nature. You can't expect a poetic film when it comes to the Joker. Its sort of like Nolans film the Prestige. That film was actually constructed in such a way to resemble the three acts of a magic trick. More than anything else this film hit the nail right on the head when it comes to the Joker. Of course heath was spectacular and totally dissapeared into the character. He brings us this totally unbalanced, darkly funny, anarchistic psychopath with absolutely no remorse for any of his actions. And that's exactly how the Joker should be as any Batman comic fan would tell you. Aside from the acting of the Joker, the writing for the character was awesome. Everything he does throughout the film is classic memorable and timeless Joker. Only the Joker could cause so much chaos so flawlessly and easily. The film was a nonstop climactic thrill ride. Now here's my dilemma. that was my biggest complaint about the film. As a writer I understand the importance of good story flow, and not trying to stuff too much stuff in one story. But at the same time if this film hadn't been so chaotic it wouldn't have worked. And it certainly would not have been true to form of the Jokers usual antics in the comics. In a way the audience feels much like the citiziens of gotham while watching this film. You're suddenly thrown into all this chaos and it never seems to stop. Now going back to what I said a moment ago, it did seem like they were trying to stuff a lot of story into it. The film was over two and a half hours and even then it was difficult to contain the story therein. Another complaint, albiet very minor, was batmans voice. Now I like Christians bat voice but I wish he would have done it a little louder. It was hard to hear at times. All the actors were great. Eckhart did a great job. Two face was great and looked absolutely grotesque, which is a good thing. He was very true to the comics. Batman was great and we really get to see an even scairier side of him this time around. Gorden becomes the badass we know and love from the comics, unlike his aprehensive and awkward self from Batman Begins. Maggie brings a lot more character to Rachel, although I think Katie did a good job with the character in the previous film. Lucious Fox gets a bigger part this time, and very well played. Michael kanes' acting is as solid as ever. The mob bosses were a bit boring when standing up next to the Joker. Scarecrow makes an appearance though it doesn't drive the story in any way. I hope to see him return in the third film so we can see more of Cillians acting talent. Throughout the whole movie the action was top notch. I have never seen a single film with so much action. But it wasn't stand alone action. The action worked with story. And believe me story and charactre are front and center in this movie. Batman really becomes himself here. He definately takes on more of a detective role, collecting evidenc eto solve crimes and track down the Joker. He has a lot more gadgets in this film too. I can't wait to see the next one when he has Wayne Manor rebuilt and gets his new improved batcave. I don't want to drag this on too long so I'm just going to say one more thing. Go see this movie now.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
