I was reluctant to see "Die Walküre", because I had been disappointed by "Das Rheingold" from the Met last fall. But this opera is different: it consists mostly of intense dialogues. Fortunately, that meant that "the machine" was mostly in the background and really only there for 2 spectacular effects: the ride of the valkyries and the fire circle at the end. Everything else could have been achieved much, much cheaper (stage wise). Having said that, experiencing this production was very engaging and moving, due to the world-class cast and the benefit of the close-ups and camera angles. I also appreciated the many "extras" for movie goers, particularly the section about the "Leitmotive" explained by the brass section! Now I can't wait to see "Siegfried" and "Götterdämmerung" next season.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The recording of this Met performance is absolutely flawless, but the presentation could improve: the AMC Burbank 16 was too cold (air-conditioned), the sound was much too loud, and there should have been at least a 10-minute intermission. Otherwise, an unforgettable experience!
Andrew Stanton and the animators at Pixar are pure geniuses. They take digital animation to new heights never achieved before. At the same time, they are faithful to the classics of movies and pop culture. Pure joy. Give them lots of Oscars!
