If, like me, you don't "get" Wes Anderson movies...skip this one. It seems to be a treatise on young love and coming of age. But this theme has been tackled so often and so much better, that I don't understand why this was written, financed, and released. Many talented actors chose to take part. Maybe they all read something into this script that I believe wasn't there. For me, the good reviews and some audience response seemed to be the Emperor's New Clothes effect. I would have left the theater after 30 minutes...but I stayed. The young girl is a very good actor. The boy wasn't. The film runs the gamut from silly to ridiculous. The writing and performances are stilled and over the top. I give this a big WHO CARES!
Cons bad acting, slow, stupid script
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This was a beautifully cast, and executed film. The story was simple, but touching and left me with greater empathy for the hard working "illegals" among us. It deserves to be seen, and thankfully, no #3D glasses are required.
Will Ferrell was pretty funny - until he became as repetitious and over the top as the rest of the film. The Sam Jackson/Dwayne Johnson death scene was inventive. The rest of the action seemed like fifty other action films. The plot was confusing - but at least it was irrelevant! Eve Mendes was awesome...but not worth the price of the ticket.
Often when the reviewers overstate their negative reactions, I lower my expectati0ons, and actually enjoy the film. This is one of those. Yes, the plot was implausible...but it's a movie- movie, not a literary work. It was no sillier than Avatar. I found Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl to be appealing, often funny, and not hard to look at. It ainn't the Godfather, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

rectum versus heart

The actors were good, and gave their all - sometimes too much. The "attempted grossout" quotient outweighed the genuine humor, The last ten minutes attempted to have "heart" which was totally too late and too lame. You can't rely for 90 minutes on rectal penetration and then try for sweetness in the end. That said, it seemed to deliver for the younger crowd. Grownups should re-watch Hangover.

I know Michael Caine loves to work, so I can almost forgive him for this. Maybe he's reached an age where he can't remember the Charles Bronson fims, which this film is nothing more than a clone of....except this one is uglier, sleazier, and without an iota of irony. I have made it a point to actually call people and tell them NOT to see it.
Compared to most movies, this was excellent. Compared to great ones, it was very good. The relentless pace and realistic feel sometimes got me so tense I was wishing there were commercials. Director Greengrass is consistently great. Matt Damon is solid and empathetic, both Everyman and Superman (although I kept forgetting this wasn't a Bourne sequel). The flaws for me were in the script. Chief Miller started out as a real character, and ended up as the smartest, toughest, most invincible soldier in history. And it needed to end with the arrest of Bush and Cheney.
