This movie was such a disappointment! There was no character development. Hence, I didn't really care what happened to the people. This movie was okay--it wasn't eye-roll horrible like Jar Jar Binks or other embarassing movie moments in otherwise good films...but it just wasn't a very good movie.
My husband is a big comic book guy so I see a lot of these kinds of films, and I think I'm pretty generous with my tolerance. In fact, I've liked every one of them, from Sky Captain to Thor, but John Carter just isn't very compelling. I thought that with Michael Chabon on the screenplay that it would actually be very good. I was really disappointed.
The action was undercut by the 3D, IMHO, and would've been much more impressive in a regular film format. In 3D, the images seem to jump around and you can't catch the detail of the fight scenes, which is a shame. After an hour, I kept hoping the film would end...but it went on and on and on. I feel like they wasted a lot of money on special effects that didn't further the plot or serve any purpose in the movie. Ray Harryhausen would've done a much more compelling rendition of the story.
