So why do the professional critics have to pan it. Maybe they're going to too many movies as a "job" and not letting themselves relax and enjoy the film. I love these kinds of movies. This isn't on the level of the first Texas Chainsaw, but still lots of jumps and suspence. It kept me and as far as I could tell my fellow movie goers on the edge of our seats. Lily was fabulous--this movie was miles beyond the star studded "Vacancy" from last year.
It's like someone cut the scenes, costumes, plot lines and characters from a big compilation of sci-fi apocolyptic movies and glued them all together. Oh, and throw in a few scenes from moveis about Knights and medieval scenes. I've never seen such a blatant rip off of multiple movies in my life. Not the least of which is the lead character looks and dresses like the female lead in Underworld and the bad guys and chase scenes are totally taken from Mad Max. The writer, who is also the director, should be ashamed of his complete lack of originality.
The whole cast was excellent. Not as light hearted as Death at a Funeral, but equally as entertaining. I was surprised and glad that Collin came out with a winning role after a string of American so-so's and the major flop of Alexander. But he fits this role to a T and his performance is brillantly subtle. The movie is very dark and has a good amount of violence and bloodshed but very entertaining. I have recomended it to all my friends.
I've seen the other user reviews and you have to wonder why so many are devided almost either 5 stars or 1 star. The biggest complain is about the hand-held appearance of much of the movie. Unless you really pay attention and can appreciate the artistry it took to give this movie that appearance it might seem cheap like Blair Witch whic was scarey as a cotton ball to me. But this movie delivers. It has blockbust effects and had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Once the action starts it's a rollar coaster. I'm begging for a sequel--OK, and I am begging for a new filming format, too. The effects were great. I want to see it again and will take friend(s) with me. My biggest complaint with the movie is it could have easily been twice as long. At least another 45 minutes to an hour. My biggest applaus goes to the monster and it's little friends. Really super suspense in the subway tunnel. Go see this! JJ Abrams is a new Lucas or Spielberg.
