This is true to the 1939 movie in it's appearance. What was very gratifying to me was that the 3D effects were very well done. I expect to be ducking or brushing things like snow flakes and other floating objects out of my face if it's well done 3D and this is the first film in a long time that I reccomend seeing in 3D for the fun of it.
The movie is a bit slow in a few parts and I wanted to rebel but that was probably because I wanted this movie to succeed and feared it might not.. And it does. By the end It's a very good film. Not on the level of the 1939 film but it might have been a disaster to try and recreate another great Oz film with the music and star power. This is a movie you can take the kids to and us big kids can have a good time, too. Not perfect but such a beautiful, stunning visual trip that it was definately worth the cost of the popcorn...and a well concieved vison of Oz.
Pros great story, great actors, great 3d & art
Cons pacing a bit slow
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I went into this film with DREAD--not really sure if Peter Jackason might have dropped the ball like in King Kong where he ran the movie way too long. Then the announcement this was going to be done in three movies really made my hopes sag. But Santa was very generous and brought us a fabulous gift of a return to Middle Earth and the material added is done so well and is from the story itself that it works and was as gratifying as the Lord of The Rings was to this Tolkien fan. The added material of the background stories and characters works extremely well. Beautifully done. Cinematography is once again stunning. The characters are so good. Especially like the Wizard with the rabbit pulled sleigh. Fantastic movie. I've seen it twice--took a friend the second time as a holiday gift. I recomend the extra HD 3D for the best picture. IMax get's blurry in some of the rich, complex scenes and the picture and 3D was flawless on the smaller extra HD 3D, Whatever you choose, I believe that if you enjoyed Lord of the Rings triology and think it did justice to the books, then I believe you'll enjoy this as much. I will go for a third time. I really felt like I'd been withdrawing from the Lord of the Rings movies--can't wait to see Smaug in action.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, cinematography/art work
Cons imax 3d a bit blurry in some scenes
Yes, I recommend this movie.

5 Star Creepy Movie

I've always considered the original TV movie to be one of the best horror films ever made for TV. Especially the dark ending which I never saw on a TV movie before But I was extremely pleased with Del Torro's new, bigger rendition of the story. It's done with the quality of the original Omen, Rosemary's baby, etc (but has nothing in common in the story or characters). This is an excellent horror/creature movie and I enjoyed every minute of it. The creatures are unbelievably creepy. They made me shudder. And the actors were all perfect in their roles. The ending was kind of predictable but still keeps the suspence and horror going to the last second in the film. Go see this one. Especially if you enjoyed the original. It would have been easy to flub this movie but Del Torro & Co. did another 5 Star film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was extremely surprised at how good this film turned out. Luckily the original writer for the first film did this one and di it well. I still love the first Fright Night but this one has such a great re-working of the basic idea that it stands on it's own and it has legs. I think most Vampire movie fans will enjoy this. The whole cast is fantastic--Collin Farrell does the handsome but underneath it all s demonic, hissing monster that jumps out of him again and again. AND: I'd grown very weary of 3D to the point of snoozing when I saw it added on to new movies. Most of the 3D films, this year, have been very weak on the 3D perk. This movie has some extremely well done 3D. It's like being in the center of the action in a number of scenes and had some fun, jump out at you effects. I haven't enoyed any 3D film like this since Avatar. This is the only film, so far in 2011, that I recomend seing in 3D. I may go see it again in on the big screen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I cosidere honesty an important value in my life but after watching this poorly written and done movie that uses a star to draw us in, I think going to a second movie in a complexx should be allowed. This is the latest in a long line of really bad movies released the past 4 months that are so bad I can't believe they went to theaters. Complete rip off and not scary with giant plot holes. Dumb gore, poor script--fear they may make a sequel. Very bad movie. hisss.

I was shocked at the ending of the movie. Not shocked as in horrified or scared but shocked at the incredible total flop it did. I've never seen a movie flop so bad. There were some plot lines and ideas and some fairly impressive effects that kept my attention but then the ending made me so angry that I'd spent any money on it. Definately should be a direct to video movie. Was that red KKK outfit or a red Bishops get up. But what a super stinker. I called/emailed and told all my friends to NOT see this one.

Boring, Dull, Etc.

Besides the sets, storyline and special effects that were all poorly done and uninspiring, Tom Cruise just isn't "all that" any more. With TV cable full of so many super hot actors like on True Blood and half a dozen other series, TC is just old, one dimentional G rated "hot guy". Tired script, villians. Filmed in the ugliest parts of the pretty places in the world. Very poor. You honestly will have to pay me to see MI4, if it's made.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

SciFi/Horror Fun.

This movie does have elements of Species, The Fly, Frankenstein's Daughter 'spliced' together. The mad scientists are a couple, both with their sicko issues that add a lot more spice, scare and suspense to the plot. I have to say the creatures is a thousand times more interesting than Species played with genius by the French actress. Truly a memorable SciFi performance that runs a gammut of emotions from sadness to need to wonder to downright scary. I srongly recommend this movie to fans of the genre. Very well done and acted. Not for kids or teens. More of an Adult SciFi. Enjoy.

Very Well Done

This is a great remake. The effects are light years beyond the original. I enjoyed the original and grew up with Ray Harryhausen's effects. But this whole piece of work is much more exciting and with effects on a par with the first Star Wars. The final battle had me on the edge of my seat. Is it "perfect" mythology--no. Get real. It is a fun, well done adventure/fantasy. Sam Worthington sure is getting a big step up in his career recently. All the effects are great--but the Pegasus was particullarly beautiful, along with the whole picture.

Excellent--Not For Kids.

This is an excellent period piece. Everything about this movie works to a 'T'. It is not for children under 21. Do not take kids to this movie and don't complain about the movie if you took a child to an R rated film. Very serious, reall material that is shocking and hard to look at but 100% true. It's not a horror film. See The Wolfman if you want a horror film. It is a very dark, disturbing film I recomend with caution. Graphic gore and susupence but only certain adults will grasp the storyline/history.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
