I am a sci-fi \ horror \ thriller fan, and this one has been on my radar since I first read about it and saw a teaser months ago. It did exceed my expectations, but it also coulda been better. Lead actress ( the female reporter ) screamed too much and sniffled too much towards the end. The ending is what got me ... unexpected, a combination of ' Blair Witch ' and ' The Descent ' ( without the cave ). Nice ! Totally would recommend, can't wait for the dvd and the extras. Movie leaves room for a sequel ( or even a nifty prequel ! ).
I won't say anything more about that scene ... or spoil the ending ( WOW - I didn't see THAT coming !!! ). And I just read that Universal is strongly considering a sequel ( of course - it just cleared $60M in the US alone ). But I will say this: this isn't your Momma's rated-R flick. Expect strong language, lots of shoot-em-up, and quite a bit of - em - human-to-human contact which may make some people blush. This flick had it all for me - and then some. Great car chases, fight scenes, storyline, twists and double-twists, a shocking ending, a double-ending. James McAvoy. And oh yeah - Angelina Jolie. I'm seeing it again !
You have no idea how much I was looking forward to this movie, and how much I wanted to like this movie while watching it. I went from both extremes while viewing it ... almost walking out ( no stars ) to watching it through my fingers it was so creepy ( 5 stars ). But in the end, M. Night simply tried too hard, the actors acted too hard, and, the music was too overbearing to give it more than 2 stars. The storyline and concept were great. If you must see this, go to a matinee. Only redeeming value: I finally saw the X-Files trailer !
... THIS IS IN MY TOP10 FOR THE YEAR SO FAR. We've heard and read this story in the news before, but never told this way. The acting is excellent ... we are hit over the head with the stereotypes we all know are out there ... politics isn't forced down our throats ... comic relief is interspersed throughout ... ( forgive me if I don't know their names, but ) cameos by the female lead from UGLY BETTY, male lead from QUINCEÑIERA, and LOS TIGRES NORTEÑOS, give this a big-budget feel ... then ending is simply perfect ( and NOT sappy ) ... and yes, the theatre was full of sniffles. Go see this movie before it disappears. By the way, " soy gringo. "
