What a wonderful surprise. I was looking for a 2 hour escape, and Adjustment Bureau is that and so much more. SPOILER ALERT: Without invoking religion, the film shows us Angels making sure that we all stay on our assigned path, and then shows us free will changing the Lord's mind. Wonderfully done. Nice adventure. Well acted.
For any guys reading this, it is a definite chick flick, but, as always, Sandra Bullock plays the smart but socially clueless heroine as well as it can be done. The story centers on her need to avoid deportation by marrying her assistant, played by Ryan Reynolds. Bullock and Reynolds are evidently friends away from acting and the on screen chemistry works from the beginning. They visit his parents home in Alaska and learn about each other and, of course, eventually fall in love. The two are believable together and the film works because of it. If you're going to be dragged, kicking and screaming into a chick flick this summer, make it this one. Funny flick and worth the couple of hours.
Daniel Craig will be, I think, a great James Bond. And Judi Dench is making M a major piece of the story. But, there still needs to be a plot. There needs to be a Bond-worthy villain. And, there needs to be "Bond. James Bond."
The action scenes were frenetic. They were very well done.
An earlier reviewer recommended waiting for the DVD to see this film. I disagree. It is a wonderful action flick and worth the time to watch. There is no question the movie is a prequel to something to follow and the evil group introduced here will eventually show us a leader in the ilk of Blofeld in the earlier stories and then Bond can become Bond again.
I went to a local Midnight show last night. Christian Bale is as dark, brooding and dangerous as in his Batman Begins role, but now we don't have to waste an hour for him to figure out what he is there to do. Heath Ledger is, indeed, a wonderful Joker. This is a very different character than Jack Nicholson's Joker. He is a lunatic, anarchist, really just interested in blowing up as many people as he can. The scenes with the two of them are incredible. Gary Oldman again performs well as Gordon (yes, he is commissioner by late in the film). Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are at the top of their games. Aaron Eckhart, as Two Face, isn't very good and honestly the character is just in the way in the movie. Two Face is a villain who should have been saved for another film. The movie is 2 1/2 hours, and would have been every bit as good at 2 hours without the Two Face parts. This movie is about as good as it gets in the comic book super-hero genre. Dark, dark, dark as Batman is supposed to be. Great special effects, good storyline. Definitely worth seeing --- even at midnight! If you like your Batman tough and edgy, this movie is for you. Finally, a Heath Ledger note: He does a fantastic job in a beautifully written role. Oscar? Give him a nomination for first class work, but please, let's not make him the greatest actor of all time simply because he has left us.
After a 19 year absence Indiana Jones returns and is in great form. He survives the A-bomb, blow dart wielding natives, avid commies and a double agent. He runs and jumps and follows clues and correctly figures what has to be done. In the end, a whole new generation is ready to carry on the franchise. Great visuals, nonstop action and the return of Indy's best leading lady make this a must see.
