I've enjoyed Dreamworks animated films, but this is the first time I thought this could actually stand up to the legacy of Disney and Pixar.
First of all, the 3-D is stunning. I'm not one who thinks all films should be in 3-D and I worry that some filmmakers might utilize the technology because its the new trendy thing that everybody wants to see. BUT, "How To Train Your Dragon" utilizes the technology to its fullest. The film really makes you feel like you actually can ride a dragon. I, at one point, caught myself smiling from ear to ear during one of these sequences. I was a little kid again!
Other than that, I think this is the first animated film from Dreamworks that really spends time developing the characters. Yes, there are wonderful flying scenes and captivating action sequences in this movie, but just as meaningful are the slower scenes in which you learn how a human and a dragon can learn to trust each other.
It is amazing stuff and, if Dreamworks continues to develop films like this (sadly, the previews prior to this movie do not give me hope), they could be SERIOUSLY create a film worthy of the legacies of Disney or Pixar.
