Despite all the nay sayers who think this movie breaks ST Canon, I found it perfectly wonderful, and a great NEW beginning, with possibilities not even considered for future stories (and I am a DIE HARD ST fan from the '60's.
Having the "old" Trek universe upended in such a creative manner is a shear stroke of brilliance. I just hope J.J. sticks around!
I have to say, as the credits rolled (and the movie "continued"), my eyes did tear up a bit. Not because the movie was sad, but because it was over and I had witnessed something really, really special.
I also wondered aloud to my wife and son (I am in the design business) what it would be like to be in the room with all the creative folks from PIXAR and DIsney as they story board a movie like this. Unlike DreamWorks, which DOES do a good job with Shrek, and others, the PIXAR/Disney folks are literally in another dimension. The "adult" humor is exquisitely done, the juvenile humor lacking in the grossness that is so prevalent in Shrek. This movie is so wonderfully crafted I want to little things like EVE's limbs and head having no visible attachment to her "body", like the tow truck in the trash from previous Pixar movies, like the Mac boot sound when Wall-E re-boots, like the search for a home for the spork--all these things make the movie comfortable, real and WONDERFUL, and supportive of a truly heart pulling story.
All is all, fabulous CG, wonderful story, great music, thought provoking message. A true delight.
