Better than expected as I was a bit turned off by the fact that the prince wasn't of African descent. Why not? The story was cute, engaging, the music was good. Story got a bit tedious midway through, but overall, a good message for young girls.
Outstanding film with stellar performances! Unbelievable what this director did on a low budget with TWO Oscar nominated actors. I LOVED the fact that the female cast members were featured as strong, independent, cultured women during the Civil Rights Era as opposed to the one dimensional subservient figures we've unfortunately grown accustomed to seeing in American films. We both cried several times but laughed and chuckled equal amounts of time. Very endearing and well-rounded character study of the time and of women we all know today and throughout history. Subject matter is a bit heavy for younger audiences, but decidedly educational with regard to a our American history. Not a black or white story--An American story. Don't miss it!
Good storyline--cute use of pound dogs and even though "talking" animals are usually annoying, in this case, I as well as my daughter was engrossed and intrigued the entire film. Good, family entertainment!
Ice Cube's performance is sufficient and he's able to get beyond his "rapper" persona long enough to be believable, but I was disappointed in Keke Palmer's performance which seemed strained and forced compared to her earlier work in Akeelah & The Bee. The movie was fine but painfully predictable and as formulaic as they come. Call it, "Akeelah & The Bee, On The Football Field," because that would be the most accurate description. The woman who played the mom was very good and believable, all the other supporting cast was simply capable.
This was the perfect summer afternoon film. We took a group of several girls to celebrate my daughter's 10th birthday. The film was enjoyable and engaging for all and proof positive that good, solid storytelling trumps special effects every time. Quality acting abounds!
