A genuinely captivating story about a 1979 government coverup gone bad involving a small town and it's countryside. It provides a glimpse of the world according to a small group of kids who favor film-making over baseball. They get intwined in a much bigger adventure than they could ever imagine. The movie draws you in and keeps you by only teasing you with flashes of "something out there". It plays on your imagination and even introduces the out-dated paranoia of a Russian Invasion in the eyes of the towns people. There is an embattled "first love" relationship that slips in and out of the plot and flashbacks via old super8 movies that provide a not too overdone history of their lives. It pits the US Airforce against the town and also forces individual characters with bad blood to work together. It has all elements of a great Sci-Fi movie and the heart-breaking/warming pieces of a great friendship story. Moments of "Stand By Me", "Red Dawn" and "Goonies" flashed into my mind. Overall, it was an excellent movie. Good cast, good cinematography, good story, cool monster!
I took my 6 year old son and we had recently "rewatched" the previous three. This one doesn't miss a beat! It's got you begging for more and then delivers. My son couldn't stop talking about it until bedtime. I loved the previous 3 and this one measures up equally to all of them! It is a must see! Just bring some bug spray! It will have your skin crawling!
