Meryl Streep continues to play her roles to perfection. Amy Adams continues to be adorable. The only problem I had with the movie was the fact that Jlia Child never had an opportunity to meet with Julie. I think she would have had an different attitude and found Julie to be a positive influence on French Cooking. Stanley Tucci was an excellent foil to Julia. I keep thinking of him as "El Morte" in Undercover Blues." If you have never seen the movie, by all means rent it on DVD.! A Must! Movie was definitely worth seeing!
My wife and I have traveled extensively throughout the world and have even been to parts of the world that looked like segments in this movie. We, as Americans, truly do not appreciate what we have compared to the very poor and distressing ghettos and slums many of which are dipicted in this film. However, while we greatly enjoyed this movie, and admire the talent and effort made to dramatize conditions in the world, I do not feel it is the "best" film of the year. . "Slumdog Millionaire" is entertaining but should be given an award for "Best Foreign Film of the year.
Quite possibly the best movie I've seen in the last five years. Rates right up there with Schindler's List. Kate Winslet's performance was impecable and udderly deserving of an academy award this year. The drafting of this film from the book was remarkable. It was a very intense film. Ralph Fiennes was perfectly cast as the grown counterpart to Bruno Ganz. This film is not for the young. The story line is really for open-minded mature adults as one must comprehend the magnatude of historical events and the naivity of "Hedi" regarding her complicity in Germany's World War II events and her own embarrassment of her iliteracy and pride in keeping it unknown. A remarkable film!
Liam Neeson's trailer says it all ," I don't have much money, but I do have special talents and, I will find you and I will kill you" Now if that doesn't peak your interest than the movie is not for you.. Just think, what would you do if your only daughter were kidnapped? Well, I probably couldn't do what Liam did but I would have wishful thinking about doing the same. While there is much implausibly in the film, just sit back and enjoy a fantastic actor at work. I highly recomend this movie!
This movie is not for the faint hearted. One should really be a b ig Mickey Rourke fan as I am. Women probably will not like this film. My wife said, after the movie, I'm glad you liked it, which probably meant, I did you a favor. My wife and I didn't think Marisa Tomai was worthy of an Oscar nomination. It may be a little too graphic regarding the pain inflicted among the wrestlers but the scene in the deli was right on point. Personally I would classify this film as a "men's night out" film. I don't think women will like be subjected to this kind of torment. But, then again, if your a Mickey Rourke fan one would agree he certainly deserves a nomination for an academy award, which will probably be his last chance to get one.
It is not often that I agree with most professional critics as well as movie reviews, however this film both directed and acted by Clint Eastwood, has emotional impact that few movies I've seen in the last few years instills upon the auduence. I think it's because we can all relate to much of what is happening in the film and, although it brings up emotions many of us may supress, it tells a story with grace and honesty to which Clint Eastwood should get all the credit. Do not miss this one!
Interesting attempt to display the origin of blues and rock and roll but somewhat disjointed and hard to follow at times. There was nevera mention that Leonard Chess, had a brother who was an equal partner in the formation of Chess Records. (Philip Chess). Beyonce as Etta James was weak as nobody could do Etta James justice and, is it a fact or fiction that Minnesota Fats was her father? All in all, a good movie that could have been a great movie if only a better plot formation had been developed. Worth seeing though. And, one aside, as a Black mother was leaving the theatre, she told her two teenage daughters that "now you've had a history lesson." A very astute and good evaluation of this film.
My wife and I left the theatre mesmorized by both the acting and the content of this film. In fact, when we went home, the first first thing I did was Goggle "Changeling" and found many additional facts related to this film. Many of the gaps left unanswered were provided by what we reviewed. But the one fact that was never answered was the true time frame and nature as to Christine Collins demise and life beyond 1935. Clint Eastwood is a master of directing and the epitome of judgement towards his film content. Bravo for a job well done and definiitely worth seeing (but don't bring children under the age of 15 as the content could be very damaging to their psychic well being).
I would call this movie a "Chick Flick" film simply because women could relate better to the theme than men. I think Jennifer Hudson has found her niche in flims. Dakota Fanning I thought was just O.K. But the real winner of thiis film was Queen Latifah. It was an entertaining movie but no real substance than an otherwise, "we've seen it before..." type of film. Good but not great would be my rating.
Not your typical western. Renee Zell...whatever is totally miscast. Needed a more desirable "tramp", so to say. Ed Harris was great as expected so was Vito Mortensen. However, everytime I saw Jeremy Irons I thought of his "Die Hard" movies and almost expected Bruce Willis to show up to save the day. Scenery and soundtrack were very appropriate but the actual story was very weak. "The 3:10 to Yuma" was a much superior film and, as someone else reviewed, "Wait till the DVD comes out for this one."
