Helen Hunt did an outstanding job wearing all of her hats, and if she was involved in casting, she did an almost perfect job. I can imagine no one else in the roles of Bernice and Frank than Bette Midler and Colin Firth. Her brother (Ben Shenkman) was also outstanding. I thought Matthew Broderick was weak, and not the best choice to play her husband.
Other than that, I was disappointed in the ending, and that alone makes the movie four stars instead of five. I did not read the book to know how it ended, but I can think of several ways to make the ending better.
If you are going to critique the way this film sterotypes groups, do everyone a favor and don't go see it. It would be obvious that you have no sense of humor. The movie is a comedy, and it makes fun of people: DEAL WITH IT.
Not Sandlers best work, but not his worst either. I laughed enough times to get my money's worth of entertainment.
Nothing great, nothing awful. It was pretty refreshing to see Henry starting to turn into his father, and the interaction between he and Henry III was just as funny. A classic line that references to another Ford/Lucas/Spielberg movie, where I was the only one in the theater laughing. I thought the action scenes were fair at best.
Still glad I went to the midnight showing. 4 theaters in Omaha, each about 2/3 full. The next several weeks, with school out, will be a madhouse.
