Once again David Yates demonstrates his inability to focus on the important details that make these movies and books transcend the merely good.
Inserting action where there was none in the book and, unforgivably, removing it from the final scene is just one example of this.
No Dawn French, no John Cleese, no Dursleys to add sparks of humor to the somber story (something Rowling always does); no funeral for Dumbledore to add pathos--this guy gets it wrong more often than right.
The romances are well done and the effects remain excellent. Alan Rickman is brilliant as usual. Worth seeing in the theatre without question. Just not worth seeing twice (I returned my second set of pre-ordered tickets at the end of the movie).
Definitely a wait and rent it. Depp was good but did not disappear into the character like he can sometimes do. Bale was generic and uninteresting. Cotillard was great despite a changeable accent. Not a great gangster movie. Not a classic. Not a waste of time either.
Twenty minutes into watching this movie I turned to my husband and said, "we're gonna watch this again tomorrow, right?" it was awesome!
Okay, so there are some plot holes the size of the Bajoran wormhole, but that is secondary to the great cast, pacing, and emotional weight of this truly excellent film. I cannot wait to see where this fresh beginning leads (hopefully to a new tv series as well as future movies).
Do not hesitate. Just go now and have a great, great time!
Nice to see two good actors in a beautiful movie with all the right elements... save one: Real suspense or tension.
At no time was I on the edge of my seat, at no time did the stakes feel particularly high.
It was a fun afternoon and a good time, nonetheless.
The ending was surprising, but they did not give enough moments to look back on and put the clues together. We just had to take the filmmaker's word for it that thing un-spooled in this way behind the scenes.
