It's been almost 20 years since the last Indiana Jones adventure so of course I, like most Indy fans, was chomping at the bit for a new installment. I was not disappointed. Indy clearly has a lot more mileage on him, but he still puts his young sidekick to shame. Watching the story unfold I felt as if I was reuniting with long lost friends. I mourned for those who didn't make it to this reunion, namely Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliot) and Dr. Jones Sr. (Sean Connery). I also missed Sallah (John Rhys Davies). The period atmosphere was flawless. The enemy was two fold: it was not only the Red Menace, but the rampant McCarthyism let loose on the American public for our protection. This should not be lost on an audience living with the Patriot Act. Spielberg orchestrated a fitting homage to the B Movies of the fifties with "the Bomb", greasers, Reds, and most tellingly, aliens. I hope fans don't leave the theater thinking space men built the pyramids! Somewhere, Erich van Daniken is smiling. It's a lot of fun to watch and I will surely watch it many more times once it's on DVD.
