This is a neat little thriller, Scandanavian style. It has that same can't-quite-put-my-finger-on-it quality as the original "Girl with Dragon Tattoo" films. The central character is a headhunter and part-time art thief for whom things get out-of-control very quickly. Mostly straight thriller, with one or two outrageous darkly-comic scenes thrown in. Highly recommended. Norwegian with English sub-titles.
Normally I avoid supernatural or horror movies, but I've seen The Woman in Black done on stage 3 times, so I was interested to see how the movie version compares. The basic concept and setting are the same, but the details and some characters are different. Well-done classic English ghost story, set in a small coastal town, complete with haunted, isolated, old mansion, and of course the shadowy Woman in Black. Not for everybody, but I liked it.
This film does have good acting, but overall I found it dark, unpleasant, and worse, predictable. When a group of unarmed men are stuck in a remote wilderness in harsh conditions, pursued by wolves, what did you think was going to happen? Yes, the interplay between the men is good, but overall I considered it unpleasant, certainly not entertaining. Sorry, I cannot recommend this one.
Film centers on Ryan Gosling and his reluctant involvement with some nasty people. He tries to do the right thing in protecting his neighbor and her son. Good acting, decent story, but film becomes gritty, very violent, unpleasant, and ultimately unsatisfying.
This film is a different take on the familiar "amnesia - mistaken identity" theme. The comparison with "Taken" is inevitable. I think it's as good or better than that film. Where "Taken" relies mostly on action, "Unknown" has the action, plus more of a plot, too. Despite 1 or 2 holes in the plot, this was still a satisfying movie experience. Recommended.
A band of mercanaries topples a dictator in a small South American country. Limited plot, enough violence and action for 3 films. Last 20 - 30 minutes is literally non-stop shoot-em-up. Features Stallone as the leader, Statham as his right-hand-man, Eric Roberts as the good-guy-gone-bad, Schwarzeneggar and Willis in cameo roles. Sly turns in a good performance but he's showing his age. I get the feeling he's trying to prove he can keep up with the younger guys.
Nice little political thriller focuses on ghost-writer who is re-writing former PM's auto-bio, discovers damaging evidence. Dis-agree with some others who say it's slow-paced, though it's certainly not an action movie. Beautiful Martha's Vineyard scenery. It was largely shot in the rain, but that's atmospheric, not dreary. Surprising to see Pierce Brosnan in a supporting role. Recommended.
Excellent WWII drama. Well-drawn characters, especially the German colonel and the French girl whose family is killed. Long but not boring. Pro: Excellent dialogue and attention to detail. Brad Pitt is very good as leader of a Allied special ops team. Con: Film lacks that special Quinten Tarantino touch so evident in Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill films, but to be fair that may have been out of place here. Good ending but implausible. Somewhat grisly in places. Watch for the character of Winston Churchill in a cameo role.
Fast-paced thriller. Classic Hitchcock theme of innocent man wrongly accused. Good acting and character development as the lead comes to grips with his situation. Lots going on here. Many characters, plot rather complex and hard to follow. French with English subtitles.
