Im a huge Speed Racer fan, (Heck, I even dressed up like Speed Racer to see the midnight showing, homemade costume with the helmet and everything!) and I was not dissapointed one bit. This movie stays true to the fans, even with its sci-fi new element. There are parts when I squealed like a little fanboy because of the little knick knacks they threw in. And youre probably thinking, "But he knows about the show, and I dont, so I wont appreciate this movie as much", that is an utterly false statement. I saw this movie with three of my friends, two of which are into anime but have never touched Speed Racer, and one thats completely out of anything involving cartoons. They all loved the movie! Its much like any origin story for any super hero movie thats come out, (ie: Iron Man, Spider Man, etc), and equally "dorky" if you choose to look at it like that. "But Iron Man was awesome! Its not dorky at all", youre probably thinking, well thats my point exactly. YOU ARE NOT A NERD FOR SEEING THIS MOVIE! One of the biggest gripes I had was the fact that I went to the midnight showing and was one of the 20 people that showed up. My theory is people are avoiding Speed Racer because they think its a childish, nerd fest with no substance. That is also a false statement. Not only does this movie REALLY push its PG rating (expect some fowl language, mainly the a-word, but the s-bomb is tossed in as well!), but its got more story than most movies released recently, as well as more heart. And not only that, if you have no interest in story and just wanna see some really awesome action, this movie has better action than Iron Man did, and I loved that movie as well. The visuals are (not only extremely colorful) but very awesome to watch, simply breathtaking in some moments. And, exactly what I expected from the Watchowski Brothers, awesome fight and gunplay scenes, as well as the highlight of the movie, the Races. This isnt your dad's Nascar! This is cars flipping and battling and duking it out for the finish line no matter what the cost! Be it cheating or illegal weapon mods, the races are a no holds barred fun fest. In the end, Speed Racer made this fan really happy, as well as an audience not accustomed to the japanese cartoon of yesteryear. Amazing, and Im going to go see it again.
