Before "Prince Caspian" came out, I re-read the book because I was curious to see what would get left out. I'm glad I re-read the book because I would have been really confused. All through the movie, I could hear people around me wondering what was going on. "How is Caspain really king?" "Who is his professor?" "How many years have gone by in Narnia since the four kids left?" I liked what I saw on the screen but the script really needed a tune-up. I understand why they decided to leave out most of Caspian's backstory, but perhaps the writers could have left a bit more in to make sure the audience got a handle on the all-important why behind the action!
This was an excellent movie with which to start the summer movie season. Hollywood is starting to realize that you CAN have Oscar-caliber actors in a summer blockbuster without damaging their street cred. Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges have wonderful chemistry as a group and really make the excellent script come alive. Add in up-and-coming director Jon Favreau, who has done excellent work in the past...but let's face it, if you score with a summer blockbuster your stock goes up even more. The choice to update the adventures of Tony Stark from Vietnam to Afghanistan was a great move and made the already timeless storyline completely relevant to an entirely new generation of moviegoers!
