Reeves’ performance of the alien Klaatu was simply dreadful. He was wooden and uninspired, and gave almost no indication of any struggles with either human form and function or human emotion. He showed no interest in Connelly, who herself did a very nice job in her role. Her struggles to bond with her step-son while trying to save the world were played with a combination of resolve and emotional vulnerability that Reeves completely wasted. The other actors were good; Cleese as the professor was a bit underutilized. The special effects were very good, although also underutilized. All in all, the lead character in this movie was all important, and as such Reeves performance let the rest of the cast down.
Aside from some minor changes to update the comic to today's world events, the movie stayed very true to the comic book. Robert Downey, Jr. did a great job playing the millionaire playboy genius who suddenly got his eyes opened. Gwyneth Paltrow was fabulous as Potts, with just the right combination of professional competence and personal vulnerability (and she looks STUNNING as a redhead.) Jeff Bridges was also solid as the villian Obadiah. All in all, an excellent movie that leaves you waiting impatiently for the sequel.
