The Original Improved

I've already seen 'Avatar' numerous times both in the theater (3, counting this one) and on DVD. The Special Edition is an improvement on the original. 8 minutes of added scenes may not seem like a lot at first glance, but they do add context and give more insight into both Pandora and some characters, particularly Tsu'tey. He was an interesting character in the original version of the film, but we only got a brief glimpse of what his true role was within the Omaticaya clan society.
When Tsu'tey hurtles off the ramp, shot after killing seven humans, I wanted to know what happened to him. Was he dead right then and there? We know that the Na'vi do not fear heights, and we also know they are quite able to land safely after falls of considerable distances, so it was conceivable that he survived the fall. The scene added to the end of the film answers that question. I won't tell exactly what the scene shows, but let's just say that it clears up Tsu'tey's fate, and also clarifies Jake Sulley's position within the Omaticaya after the defeat of RDA and the humans.
Overall, I enjoyed this version more than the original. Watching it again in 3D really brought out the fact that it was originally designed for 3D to be seen in theaters. DVD is good; Blu-Ray is better, but to really do Avatar justice it should be seen on a BIG screen in Three Dimensions.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Just came back from seeing "Avatar." In a word, it was TREMENDOUS. The Motion Picture Academy might as well gift wrap the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for the film right now, and I think it should be nominated for Best Picture as well. Avatar has a great plot, terrific acting, and action as only James Cameron can deliver.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Excellent Film

I am an old Marvel comic fan from way back, so "Iron Man" was a film I looked forward to with great anticipation. The primary factor that makes this film work is casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the millionaire industrialist/engineer/playboy. Downey provides a realistic character to balance the effects-driven action sequences, and his well-documented personal issues make his interpretation of Stark that much more believable.
The aforementioned effects are created by master fx studio ILM, and are top-notch indeed. Stark's Iron Man suit is truly a technological marvel (no pun intended); throw in the fact that the U.S. military is actually working on technology that is very similar to what is shown in the film (sans flying capability), and you have something that is not outside the realm of reality.
The plot line of "Iron Man" is one of transformation: Stark starts out as a self-absorbed materialist, but events change both his physical state and mental outlook. He develops a real conscience, and must fight to further his new direction. Iron Man is created as an extension of this new morality.
All in all, I highly recommend "Iron Man" as more than the stock super hero/action cliche. While is indeed fun to watch, the film really has more to say than just fx and explosions...
Yes, I recommend this movie.
