indeed, the latest installment delivers more than one could ever ask from a batman movie, and yes, it has raised the bar for the superhero genre. there are several moments of cinematic brilliance, many of them coming from the dark knight in his natural elements... nighttime, the city, and action sequences. bale had already proved he's the best guy for the suit, here we get more of that same brooding intensity. it's no surprise that the film ultimately belongs to heath ledger. having felt nicholson's joker wore thin in burton's '89 batman, i found ledger's full-bodied performance even more gratifying, and genuinely terrifying. that said, aaron eckhart's performance shouldn't be overlooked. sadly his storyline ends up being a bit rushed in the second half and doesn't get the proper character arc it deserves. unfortunately the movie also suffers from confusion and bloat due to tedious subplots and overuse of moral rhetoric. and while my gripes may seem minor, i think they are enough to keep it from masterpiece status. it's hard not to compare the dark knight to the other recent brilliant superhero flick in iron man. while iron man doesn't boast a masterful performance nor good vs. evil battle on an epic scale, it clearly benefitted from being sleeker and inducing more humor. i left the theatre this time feeling a bit drained, rather than excited and ready for more.
