I've seen a few other filmed musical stagings at AMC. The camera and audio recording work here was superior than most of them.
Nothing beats a live performance but audience in the theater was at least as fun as any stage audience I've been with.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Do not mistake Kick-Ass for Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind. But if you like your violence edged with humor, your action tinted with pathos, little girls with foul mouths, and colorfully costumed people getting beat-up, then Kick-Ass is a highly satisfying entertainment.
The first 20 minutes drag a little as we go through the typically insufferable Origins Story. But once the brutality gets going, it just keeps going and going and going.
stealing from the Zombie Survival Guide but with its own sensibility, Zombieland was a lot of dumb fun and laughs without being idiotic. Jesse Eisenberg should keep making 'Land' movies: Zombieland, Adventureland....
I saw the original movie in junior high and watched the TV series in high school. (Didn't see the TV series update in grad school though). I wanted to like this and went to go see it before being inundated with reviews. The original characters were so iconic and the challenges seemed more palpable. However, none of the new students stood out for me, their stories didn't feel fleshed out--sometimes imitating or weakly echoing the original. Rather than just echoing the past, I would have liked had they directly addressed how things are different now. At one point the filmmaking character mentioned YouTube. What about reality shows and competitions? Cable? The Internet?
I wanted to like this movie. I had some background on the gangster period of the 30s-40s. I think Depp and Bale are fine actors. But the story never quite gelled together. It was not quite romantic between Depp and Cottiliard; little sense of connection between Depp and Bale. I think we were supposed to recall Mann's movie "Heat" but I never got the hightened sense of the hunt here.
The experimental live broadcast show was quite fun and a good place to hangout with other fans of This American Life.
Only thing: the sound mix at my theater was _awful_ (AMC Ontario Mills 30). The audience mike was too loud as was the music mix while the voice mikes and some of the video clips were too low.
