I thoroughly enjoyed the Met's simulcast of Carmen -- indeed, the simulcasts are a great delight, I find. I gather that some viewers do not like the close-ups, but I enjoy the fact that singers must also act -- very different from the opera performances I saw in my childhood and, indeed, until recently.
But this one was particularly grand, and I think Elina Garanca will own the role for a considerable time. Roberto Alagna is always fine, and it was interesting to hear Teddy Tahu Rhodes pinch-hitting as Escamillo.
