Great actors, great story, characters with depth, kicking action and effects. How often do we get to experience a movie with all of these? Iron Man delivers them and with a vengeance. The result is an intense and exciting film. For those who always wished there would be an Iron Man movie, and I waited since the late 60s for one to exist, it is extremely rewarding. Adaptations made from the comic book successfully retained the series' integrity, so if you're a diehard "Shellhead" fan, there's every chance that you will come away from this with great satisfaction.
Tony Stark, cavalier billionaire playboy and weapons manufacturer is caught in an ambush during a demonstration of his latest missile in Afghanistan. The armor he builds to escape from his captors also keeps him alive. Sidelined from making corporate decisions, Stark streamlines his armor and works to put an end to his business partner's dealings. There's more to it than that, but I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't yet seen the movie or are unfamiliar with the comic.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Stark just right, as a man who'se lived the fast life and been forced to slow down and consider a greater purpose. Gwyneth Paltrow is no stranger to adventure movies, having played a cocky reporter in Sky Captain. Here she is Pepper Potts, Stark's assistant, dutiful and hopelessly unrequited. There are moments between them which are priceless, and could not have succeeded with anyone else. Jeff Bridges is Stark's partner Obadiah Stane, and plays an opportunist with just the right smarminess when it needs to be. See this movie - as big as you can.
