In a world that thinks sports starts are heroes, and movies are barely worth viewing on DVD, Defiance is the telling of a story of true heroism and the fight for life at a time when evil ran over the Earth almost unchecked.
When we think about what the generation of our grand fathers and great grand fathers and mothers experience, it's impossible for us to comprehend. This show is an instant classic of struggle and hope for survival.
Appeasement fails. Sometimes, we have to fight against evil. And sometimes it's an ugly fight.
This is a very interesting foreign film. Especially if one is interested in Post WW2 Germany. The story is very powerful, and an interesting story in it's own right. I doubt it will ever be a classic, but it is an interesting cult piece.
A few things should be known before choosing to go to this movie! 1) If you are grieving a significant human loss in your life, this will not help! Especially if you were with your loved one when they died. 2) If you buried your own children it's not good. 3) This movie seemed to have elements of at least a dozen other movies which was a distraction! 4) Hollywood appears to have stopped "telling stories about life" and is now "dictating what life is really like" in a propaganda kinda of way.
For a change, a movie that is actually pretty accurate. It will speak to the generation that lived before the 70s and 80s, but I think it will be empty to the younger generation that have no sense of history. They might have added something of the rise and fall of the Third Reich to help give some perspective to the whole story. Sadly, the movie was already 2 hours long (and needed to be to tell the story). However, adding historical meaning for the younger generation might have added as much as 30 minutes. Maybe it would have been worth it.
The movie tries to put a lot of circumstances together. While the base notion of the story is good, the way Will Smith's character tries to resolve things is such nonsense as to be a distraction. Too many things that just don't make sense in the real world.
The overall plot line could have been much stronger than it turned out to be. None of the actors had to work very hard and it showed.
This original show was a "people" show. And there was just not enough real people connection in the story. The grossly unnatural relationships were just weak and the story suffered for it.
The comic book hero has been a great source of movie storytelling over the last 10 or 15 years. Many have been really great. This is the worst one I've ever seen. Sadly, they mix elements and the storyline is just weak.
The main thing that comes to mind is why anyone would pay money to see something like this. If you hate Bush then you can get a chuckle or two to feed your hate. Beyond that it's just meaningless garbage.
