Much hype has been made about the fact that the main character isn't a traditional white princess of past story lines. Unlike the relatively helpless females of early Disney years, who always required magic or a man to "complete" their existence, this main character is much like many female characters of Disney & Pixar movies from the past 15 years or so. But it seems to me that Disney pushed the "anti-stereotype" too far, in an attempt to make amends for their years of "white-bias". There were funny moments, but the character development wasn't nearly as good as movies like Little Mermaid, Mulan, and Pocohontas.
The MPAA rating system is a farce...like the college football BCS. I've recently seen far less scary (and adult) PG-13 and R rated movies than this PG-rated Jim Carrey buffoonery. The best part of the movie, practically, was Andrea Bocelli singing during the credits! Yes, the 3D effects, especially on the IMAX-ish screen (the retrofitted IMAX screens aren't as big as true built-from-scratch IMAX) was awesome...but the 3D glasses were so uncomfortable that I left with an awful headache. I actually discovered that the kids glasses are padded and more comfortable.
Don't take very young or immature/impressionable children.
When the most memorable moment of a movie is a scene where every female in the audience between 6 and 60 gasps at the irrelevant removal of a t-shirt by Mr. Tall and Handsome (both light and dark), you know most guys in the audience are in for a groaner.
This chick-flick might serve to advance the prurient interests of the teen to cougar crowd, but does little to advance the story...at least not for the first hour. It seems that the author, as well as the movie studio, dragged this story out into a second tome to milk the Twilight craze for as much money as they could get...and it worked.
not because of the movie, but because of admittedly preconceived notions about Robert Downey Jr. I was wrong...his acting was superb, the supporting cast was equally as good, and the special effects were stunning in their own right.
I was on the edge of my seat through most of the movie...it's a good thing I don't (yet) have a heart condition :)
SPOILER ALERT
The villain and final scene was quite predictable (the only flaw in the movie was how the villian managed to operate the armaments in their possession on the first try).
Also, if you didn't stay till the bitter end, you missed a spoiler about the next movie.
If you go to this movie expecting Lawrence of Arabia, or Juno, or other Oscar caliber movie...get some humor into your life. This is not a movie for anyone looking for adult comedy, romance, or a meaningful plot. However, if you're looking for 90 minutes of edge of your seat fun, with the occasional gigantic venus flytrap or allosaurus jumping at you from the screen...this is one of the best 3-D movies I've seen...anywhere.
There are plenty of references to movies from the late 70's to the early 90's if you look/listen for them...and just enough eye candy and lite innuendo. Yes, it's somewhat predictable...but not as much as the latest Indy and a heck of a lot less stupid and unbelievable.
Be careful about bringing yungins who are too little...there are some scary parts that had my 7 year old in tears...for a few minutes...and then she was excited again.
