I've had several friends declare this the best comic-book/superhero movie they've ever seen. I'm not ready to overreact quite that much, but it's definitely a must-see for fans of the genre.
The script is pretty tight. It lacked back story in a couple places, but not so much that it detracts from the movie. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow sparkle, and Jeff Bridges kills. The Stan Lee cameo is like a MasterCard commercial -- priceless. Kudos to Jon Favreau.
Boycott this movie out of fear of a sequel. I'd rate it minus-1, but I'm not allowed. I had high hopes. As it turned out, this was among the worst movies I've ever seen. I found only one redeeming quality in the movie. The premise seemed cool enough if somewhat cliche, but Doomsday doesn't deliver at all. Rhona Mitra is hot, but that's as far as I can recommend the movie. The plot is ludicrous -- I'll spare important details -- and the movie is much more gory than I expected. I didn't mind that personally, but others might find it unnecessarily shocking. Don't even think about taking take impressionable children expecting a slick science-fiction thriller. The movie unfortunately takes itself seriously, but everything is muddled. The prime minister and his "cabinet" are unbearably flat. Even Mitra's character is poorly developed. Bad, bad script. In the end, the movie winds up being a bit like Scary Movie in that it almost ends up poking fun at the movies it pays homage to in a way. If you want to see a hodgepodge of I Am Legend (killer virus), Robin Hood (unbelievably yes, but where did all the clothes come from), 28 Days (zombies), Mad Max (freaktown civilization) and Gone in 60 Seconds (yes, I went there ... where did the car come from?), feel free to waste your $9.
