The movie was a little slow at times, but it's almost necessary to build the characters in this type of movie. Depp, as usual, plays the character beautifully. 3.5 stars for the movie itself, and 4 stars for Depp's acting.
My life in ruins was by no means my big fat greek wedding. It was cute and predictable, but a nice date movie. I wasn't expecting Richard Dreyfuss to steal the movie. It does drag on in spots, and the time spent waiting for Georgia to get her mojo back could be spent developing other characters. I was torn between a 2 and a 3.... so 2.5...or 2.75.
I didn't read the book, but I understand that this was slightly different.
This is one of those movies where the audience is hushed throughout. There are a few comedic moments to lighten the mood, but most of the movie is thought provoking and sad. Not depressing... but I found myself thinking...what would I do in this situation. There are many tearful moments throughout the movie, so bring plenty of tissues. Sofia Vassilleva did a wonderful job as Katie.
This movie is not for children. Plain and simple....hence the R rating that people choose to ignore.
The music, especially Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel was a perfect fit. The movie was more violent than I had expected. It was ok...but not great. Hard to follow, especially since I haven't read the graphic novel. I left the movie thinking... huh? The jury is still out.
If you enjoyed the Da Vinci code, you will likely enjoy this. It was a little far fetched, being able to solve everything in such a short amount of time. There was an element of surprise, and a somewhat unexpected plot twist (we had it figured out- but it was still surprising). It's one of those movies that you have to pay attention to in order to keep up.
I expected this to be a sophmoric comedy about guys in Vegas, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was always a what now moment or a how on earth did that happen situation. The raunchiest part of the movie is probably just before the credits role. If you are easily offended, leave before the pictures are shown. In fact, if you are easily offended, you are probably better off seeing something else. Whatever you do, keep the kids at home.
Yes, the proposal is a somewhat predicatable love story. But, the movie had me, and everyone else in the auditorium laughing the entire movie. It is long, but if you need to take a break, be sure not to miss the bonfire scene with Betty White. Make sure to stay through part of the credits also.
The movie was predicatable, but I went into it with that in mind. Obviously, anyone familiar with A Christmas Carol or Scrooged could get the general premise of the movie. But overall, it was cute.
Contrary to the reviews of others, this film does not warrant an R rating. Despite what one reviewer wrote, there is no nudity in the movie, although there are scantily clad women. I've read a number of reviews from people stating that it is inappropriate for young children or pre-teens. This is why it is rated PG-13. A PG-13 rating means that is is inappropriate for children under 13, and parents are stongly cautioned. Before people complain about a rating, they should research the MPAA rating system.
They can review it because it was shown in a secret showing this week. (You can read about the showing on IMDB.com I think). It garnered rave reviews and a 5 minute standing ovation.
However, I am rather annoyed when people haven't seen an advance review of it, and base their review solely on their opinion of a show or book (Twilight, Hannah Montana, etc........)
Mickey Rourke does an excellent job portraying this character. For "old-school" wrestling fans like me, it reminded me of what wrestlers do to entertain and how much of their life they give up to entertain a crowd. It also reminds me of some of the 80's wrestlers like Jake the Snake Roberts, who once was great, and lost everything, became drug addicted, etc. No- this is not a movie for children- hence the R rating. As for the ending being boring as one suggested- it is anything but. I won't spoil it, but perhaps they just didn't get it.
