Best reworking of a brand ever!

It's enough to say that, as other reviewers have exclaimed, I and my kids found the movie immensely enjoyable. The great attraction of the original series was the mixture of science fiction fun and meaningful characterizations. The plots in Star Trek (unlike the overweening though attractive Star Wars franchise) have always explored quandries, ethical dilemmas, the weighing of outcomes and means, and so helped to frame ordinary human experience in the way of the best myths. Thanks to the writers and others who made the film; I hope they continue to provide the same quality in their subsequent efforts.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Bond without the Bubble Gum

I look back on the Bond films of my youth, including Connery's Bond, and think how childish, contrived and smirky they were. Craig's Bond is sexually troubled, he can't sleep, and he explodes with lethal excitement when threatened. He is a more real person, and thus more chilling. Regarding the story elements, we still must suspend disbelief, of course. I wonder if those critical of this plot go to see Batman, or Iron Man, or etc. This film is fantasy, but intelligently done.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Puzzled by poor reviews

I am puzzled at this film’s reception. I think some have been disappointed by the lack of hyped action, but also missed the use of metaphor, in the use of "eye in the sky" images representing the ironical limitations of our technology-dependent military-political society; or in DiCaprio's character's dangerous longing to be close to a people he had come to admire - a metaphor for the dilemma of Westerners who want to engage the Islamic world but feel divided by prejudice they did not create and do not share. This film shares more, despite the subject matter, with the works of Lawrence Durrell and Paul Bowles, than with movies in the modern espionage genre. It’s worthwhile – I encourage you to see it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Iron Man combines the chills and thrills fun of the modern superhero blockbuster with a thoughtful character study, AND a topical message about corruption, misadventure and misdirection in American foreign policy. Very engaging, on multiple levels, and well-acted to boot!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
