It's been a while since I have been this satisfied by a movie (maybe since Star Wars ep IV-VI, ET, Goonies, or Close Encounters??). I am a movie "junkie" - I mean I love watching movies, but this combines everything I love - sci-fi, humor, action, emotional connections from youth and family experiences, and to top it off I used to film super 8 movies in the 70's so that was icing!
J.J. Abrams has such a great feel for creating action, suspense, humor, and emotion (loved Star Trek) - and put that together with the Speilberg influence and you have double the greatness! The cast is GREAT - especially the kids!!!
Go see this and enjoy - I will see it again, and again...

Fun for a family man

I had a great time with my wife as a date. This included good action and CGI, as well as humor I laughed out loud too, along with my wife and others in the audience. A fun action fantasy with real-life elements and a positive message. The audience applauded at the end if that tells you anything. Just go and have fun - don't over-think it!

Visually Entertaining - Good Message

I have no knowledge of the Avatar cartoon or story behind this so this is from my perspective only. I am also easily entertained and generally enjoy sci-fi and fantasy, so with all that said, to me this was a very entertaining and enjoyable movie. The visual effects were well done, and the underlying message, while fairly standard, was good for kids and adults (especially those not too jaded). The main character was played well and fit the part well, and most other actors were acceptable - some better than others. Bottom line for me was the visually impressive look of the movie and the chance to enjoy a couple hours of escapism was well worth it. Go see it and don't expect a Lord of the Rings quality - just enjoy the fun ride!!

In a word...awesome! This is a beautiful movie. The visual experience and the emotions of the story are very fulfilling. I am biased towards excellent sci-fi, but this is not only that, but truly a great movie. The themes of the story are not necessarily new, but the presentation takes us to an amazing world and the production and acting are top level, from all characters. I look forward to seeing it again! If you haven't seen it - you should, and soon.

As a disclaimer, I confess I generally like movies with a sci-fi theme, and this turns out to have a strong one. The movie has a good level of suspense and some scary images, not to mention amazing CG effects. I am also a fan of Nicolas Cage. Some of the negatives I have read address Cage's acting or dialog, but I thought it all fit with the story and the character's situation. Also mentioned in other reviews is the ending - well I was fine with it, due in part to my affection for sci-fi.
There is a dark side to the ending which is a bit sad, but there is an underlying message that is thought-provoking and even mixes in a bit of old time religion, which we can all use a bit of - in my opinion.
Bottom line - I was very entertained!
