I went to see this movie not expecting a lot and I walked out impressed. I loved the characters, the performances, and the story. I laughed, cried, and generally had a wonderful time at the movies! People are comparing this film to Forrest Gump, which I frankly disliked. I hadn't read the reviews comparing the two and I'm glad I hadn't. There are ways in which it's contrived and you'll have to suspend a lot of disbelief but all in all I loved it.
I've seen the play multiple times, love the music, and like many people have said, was a little concerned about how the movie would turn out. It's absolutely a blast. I saw it last weekend and again this weekend. No, the voices aren't operatic; no, the story isn't brilliantly written literature. But the music is great, the cast looks like they're having a great time, and I couldn't help but smile and practically dance in the aisles watching it. I heartily recommend it.
