The Coen boys have done it again - created a movie that's compelling, distinctive, and true to its source: the novel. After John Wayne blustered his way through the original, I thought I'd never watch True Grit again. However the cast, the script, the photography, the pacing... everything about this film is so well done, it should be around for a long time. I was touched by the heart of the story, and especially the 3-dimensional realization of Rooster, Mattie, LaBoeuf, Tom Chaney and Lucky Ned Pepper. You won't forget these people anytime soon. What a great way to end the year, with True Grit on the big screen.
This is a powerful film, from script to performance to direction and editing. But it is not for anyone who finds domestic conflict... more than conflict... war ... upsetting. Yes, I'd recommend it to friends, but on a selective basis. Kate, Leonardo, and the entire cast are superb. However, as the relationship escalates, I found myself wanting to call "time out," and go out for a breath of fresh air. It's intense and it is exciting movie making.
This is the way we used to make the epic... a sweeping canvas, lots of action, a love story, and a kid. I liked the movie, found it visually compelling. But Baz should've trimmed about 15 to 20 minutes. He played every scene, every emotion for what it was worth and more. Sometimes less is more, as it would have been here. Still, it's an impressive movie. I saw it at a full house, big screen, and the audience was glued to the screen, with applause at the end.
Okay, another special effects, super hero, dominate the world movie, but.... and this is a big but... It works. It's entertaining. Downey and Bridges and Paltrow and Howard are terrific - they show what real acting is all about. I'm over 60 years old, love dramas, comedies, well written, few special effects. And I did not read Iron Man comics. But I enjoyed this movie a lot. Great fun.
