Gluck's short and extremely intense work shines in this production where the principal singers despite suffering bad colds, sang so beautifully with all the appropriate emotionality. I was in tears and on the edge of my seat--Greek myths speak deeply to us if we are open to their truths.
It brings us the poetry and fire of New Orleans Ninth Ward residents Kimberly Rivers Roberts and her husband Scott Roberts. As they endure Hurricane Katrina in real time, they survive, rescue many others, AND they give a gift to the world: Kimberly's awesome talent. The directors searched for the best way to incorporate Kimberly's original video shot just before and during the storm; they wisely decided to make the movie about her. Seeing this truly adult, compassionate woman take command, ready for the occasion with a voice and poetic talent to express--you have to see this unfold! Her voice frames the losses and abandonment. Yet, this compelling movie ends on an up note.
